āIām sorry, sir,ā the doctor said calmly, ābut your wife will most likely never wake up. Sheās in too much pain. You need to sign the papers so we can turn off the machines.ā
The man, barely holding back his tears, looked at his wife.
āDoctor⦠but maybe thereās still a small chance? Maybe we can wait just a little longer?ā
The doctor shook his head.
āItās pointless. Sheās breathing only because of the machines. I understand how much pain youāre in⦠but believe me, itās even more painful for her. You have to let her go.ā
Those words sounded like a death sentence. He loved her more than anything in the world. Ever since the accident, his life had completely changed. For almost two months he hadnāt left her side ā he slept in the hospital, held her hand, talked about their children, their home, and the life waiting for her.
At home, their two sons missed her deeply and asked every day:
āDad, will Mommy wake up? Will she come back to us?ā
And wiping his tears, he would say,
āOf course, boys. We must believe.ā
But his faith was fading. And then came the day the doctors made the final decision. The man signed the papers, though his hands were shaking so badly he could hardly hold the pen. The machines were turned off. A soft beep echoed through the room, and the silence that followed was unbearable.
He held her hand tightly, pressed her fingers to his lips, and whispered:
āI will always love you. You are the best wife and mother. Rest now, my love. Iāll tell our children what a wonderful mother they had.ā
He leaned down to kiss her forehead⦠and suddenly froze. His eyes widened in horror. The man noticed something that made his heart stopā¦
The woman wasnāt breathing. The monitor showed a flatline ā no pulse. Her husband bent closer, his lips trembling as he pressed them to her cold forehead. The machines were silent, and the air was thick with hopelessness.
āThis⦠this canāt beā¦ā whispered one of the doctors.
But it wasnāt an illusion. The impossible had happened. Her fingers twitched slightly. Her eyelids moved. The man froze, unable to believe what he saw.
The doctor rushed to her side, checked her pulse, and then turned to everyone in shock.
āSheās alive!ā
The doctors quickly reconnected the medical devices, monitored the readings, and within moments, her pulse returned. Color flushed back into her cheeks, and her breathing became steady.
A few hours later, she finally opened her eyes. Her gaze was weak, but unmistakableāshe was looking right at him.
Tears filled the husbandās eyes as he whispered, voice trembling:
āWelcome back, my love.ā
